In recent Instagram posts, T.I. has shown support for NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick after the San Francisco 49er refused to stand for the national anthem.
“Listen, I respect the troops. I respect their efforts,” the rapper wrote on Instagram. “However, I also acknowledge that black soldiers fought & died in WW2 to defend freedoms & liberties overseas that they couldn’t even receive for themselves when they made it back home as veterans. Me standing UP(or not standing)for mines shouldn’t be taken as an insult against yours….. UNLESS you hope to continue to oppress US & devalue our position in American society.”
T.I. later added that he’s rebelled against the national anthem since childhood.
“Side note: I was suspended in middle school for not standing up for the pledge. This POV ain’t new to me.”

T.I. is just one of a few celebs who have spoken out in support of Kaepernick, including Spike Lee, Chuck D, and W. Kamau Bell. While Kaepernick has received tons of backlash, he isn’t the first celebrity to be targeted by fans for not being patriotic enough. Earlier this month, Olympian Gabby Douglas received criticism for not placing her hand over her heart during the anthem. Still, Kaepernick says he is ready for any backlash that comes his way and says he’ll continue to protest throughout the season. “If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right.”
