St. John’s University student Tiarah Poyau was shot and killed early Monday during Brooklyn’s annual J’Ouvert Festival.
The cause of her death?
She simply a told man not to grind on her during the parade, when he pulled out a gun and shot her at close range near her eye.
The New York Post reports that Poyau and three friends were participating in the festival when she told the man, who was later identified by authorities as Reginald Moise, to “get off” her. A witness says they heard the gun shot ring out and saw Poyau’s body fall at Empire Boulevard and Franklin Avenue.
Following the shooting, Moise, 20, allegedly fled to his girlfriend’s home where he then fired two more rounds from his 9 millimeter handgun. After one of the bullets entered the home of a neighbor, he left in his gray Ford Explorer, crashing into multiple parked cars before losing control of the wheel.

Police stopped him around 8 a.m. He was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.
Friends and family remember Poyau as a “stellar person” and describe what happened to her as “just horrible.”
A neighbor of Poyau, Anna Jackson, told The Post that the arrest of the 22-year-old’s alleged killer will hopefully bring justice to her name and teach other’s a lesson.
“I hope this is a lesson to the next one who wants to act wild and go to a parade to shoot up someone,” she said. “Why would you bring a gun to a parade? You’re supposed to go to have fun, not shoot people.”
