In the weeks before the Grammy’s, Atlanta celebrity makeup artist Yolanda Frederick flew to Paris with Ciara to conceptualize her head-to-toe red carpet look with Givenchy designer, Riccardo Tisci. “He absolutely fell in love with Ciara…she’s his new muse,” said Frederick, who adds that the kerfluffle over Ciara arriving late to the Givenchy couture show was totally manufactured. “Riccardo told her to come late so she could make a proper diva entrance!”
To create a clean, subtly bronzed lid, Frederick blended Shu Uemura Cream Eye Shadow in P Beige ($30, pictured) all over the lid, from lashes to crease.
Next, Frederick applied a row of fabulous false lashes. “I always bend the lashes in half first,” says Frederick. “It gives them a curve, so they place better on your lid.” When the lashes dried, she swiped Shu Uemura Ultimate Expression Mascara in Black ($23) onto top and bottom lashes, and then applied Shu Uemura Drawing Pencil in Me Black ($19) to the inner rim of the top lid.
After Frederick perfected Tia’s eye look, she moved on to skin, using Shu Uemura Nobara Cream Cover Stick Foundation in Deep Sand #524 ($42), the exact same shade she used on Ciara. “I love this foundation…it’s creamy and gives incredible coverage,” says Frederick, who first swiped the stick on Tia’s skin, and then blended it in with a flat foundation brush.
“I like to put blush on right after applying foundation,” explains Frederick. “The pigment is richer when it’s wet, so it really picks up the blush and the color lasts longer.” She used Shu Uemura Glow On Blush in Amber #82 ($21), a warm peach that looked natural on both Ciara and Tia’s skin.
To give her skin some dimension and depth, Frederick used her fingers to blend one of her favorite highlighters, Lancome Color Design Creme Blush in Model Mocha ($27), along the tops of Tia’s cheekbones and the browbone.
First, Frederick used Cargo Reverse Lip Liner in Flesh Tone 02 ($16) to trace just outside Tia’s upper lip line. “I use this trick on Ciara, too,” says Frederick. “It makes the top lip look a bit fuller, to match the bottom.” Then, she applied Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Lipstick in 940M ($23), a pale nude shade.
To give Tia’s lips an extra sheen, Frederick layered Shu Uemura Gloss Unlimited in BG 980N ($22) over the lipstick.
