A Baltimore appeals court has issued a delay in the trial of Officer Caesar Goodson Jr., one of the six officers charged with the April death of Freddie Gray.
USA TODAY reports that jury selection in Goodson’s trial was set to begin today; however, a delay was granted while a judge deliberates on whether other officers will be required to testify at Goodson’s trial.
A Comprehensive Timelines of the Freddie Gray Tragedy
Gray died on April 20, one week after he was arrested for allegedly possessing a switchblade. He was placed in a police van, driven by Goodson, and transported to the police station. At some point during the ride, he sustained severe injuries, including a severed spinal cord.
Six officers have been charged in Gray’s death, though Goodson has been charged with the most offenses: second-degree depraved-heart murder, manslaughter, second-degree assault, two counts of vehicular manslaughter, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office.
Goodson will be the second officer to stand trial. Last month, a judge declared a mistrial in the case of Officer William Porter (a retrial has been scheduled for June 13). Prosecutors are calling for Porter to testify at Goodson’s upcoming trial.
