President Donald Trump didn’t exactly receive a warm welcome on Sunday night when he was introduced at Nationals Park in Washington D.C., where the Nats were playing the Houston Astros.
As Trump was introduced, the crowd booed and jeered. Some people chanted, “Lock him up!” echoing some Trump supporters’ who often break into chants demanding that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton be locked up.
Despite the tough crowd, Trump and first lady Melania Trump stood clapping and smiling through it all.
According to USA Today, Trump hasn’t been to a major league game since taking office in January 2017.
USA Today further notes, with the exception of Trump, every president since William Taft in 1910 has thrown out a ceremonial first pitch either for Opening Day, the All-Star Game, or the World Series.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said that Trump decided not to throw out the ceremonial first pitch “in order to make the fan experience as positive as possible.”
That being said, fans still weren’t impressed if their boos were anything to go by.
