President Donald Trump’s “A Salute to America” Independence Day celebration was a huge fail. During his 4th of July speech he managed to rewrite a few key moments in history.
In his 4th of July speech, Trump said the Continental Army “manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over the airports, it did everything it had to do” in 1781 against the British, Newsweek reported. This was one of Trump’s biggest fails. The Wright Brothers didn’t take the first airplane flight in history until December of 1903.
The 45th president also suggested that the Continental Army was named after President George Washington and credited the army with winning the battle of Fort McHenry, according to Newsweek, but the battle of Fort McHenry was over 30 years later in 1814.
In addition to the speech mishaps, Trump was criticized for bringing military tanks to Washington D.C. to add to the 4th of July festivities. He also fenced off the very public Lincoln Memorial for the parade.
Many accused Trump of turning the rather nonpartisan celebration into a campaign event. Some seating was even ticketed by the Republican National Committee.
Through all the controversy, the one thing we can count on is that the internet was ready with jokes.
