Ladies, there is another reason to spend more time in the office these days. Heartthrob actor Idris Elba has been cast on NBC’s “The Office” according to Variety. Details are slim about his character’s plotline, other than he’ll play a no-nonsense hire at a corporate office. Perhaps Elba will rely on his days playing the streetwise but intelligent Stringer Bell on “The Wire.” Until then, the British actor will be seen playing opposite Beyoncé in “Obsessed.”-BB
National Urban League: Believes Inauguration Is a Civil Rights Victory
National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial is particulary excited for what President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration means for the underrepresented citizens he champions.
“The inauguration of Barack Obama is a civil rights victory for all people,” he tells ESSENCE.com. “This is a moment that renews the nation’s founding promise of freedom, equality and opportunity for all.”
The former mayor of New Orleans also reminds Americans that the historic day is only the beginning and there is much work still to be done.
“While January 20, 2009 will go down as a turning point in our nation’s history, we should not be lulled into thinking that our work is done,” Morial adds. “There will still be big problems in our communities and deep divisions in our country that require not only the attention of Washington, but of all of us. We must become even more engaged as citizens in building an ever more perfect union.”
