Tyler Perry is fed up with Spike Lee and he voiced a few comments directly to the filmmaker yesterday saying, “I’m so sick of hearing about damn Spike Lee. Spike can go straight to hell. You can print that,” according to Box Office Magazine. Perry fired off the angry remarks during a press conference adding, “I am sick of him — he talked about Whoopi, he talked about Oprah, he talked about me. Spike needs to shut the hell up!”
Perry became angered because of several remarks that Lee has made that suggest Perry’s films are “coonery and buffoonery.” In a post on his website this week, Perry said he tries not to focus on negativity from within his own community, but it sometimes frustrates him. Perry said at the press conference that he doesn’t see the same criticisms being dished out in other racial communities. “I’m sick of [the criticism] from us; we don’t have to worry about anybody else trying to destroy us and take shots because we do it to ourselves,” said Perry.
Perry’s latest film, “Madea’s Big Happy Family,” opens Friday in theaters nationwide. Today Perry will be hosting a live chat on the official Madea Facebook page where fans will be able to ask questions about Madea and her upcoming adventures in the new movie.
Perry is one of the most successful Black business owners in media and was ranked by Forbes magazine as the sixth highest-paid man in Hollywood. All of his films are independently financed and have grossed over $520 million in ticket receipts since 2005.
Do you think that Perry should be criticized for the images he portrays in his films?
