Fashion industry: 0. Tyra Banks: 1.
The model-turned-talk show host posted a powerful photo and caption on Instagram earlier this week blasting the fashion industry for the unwarranted pressure that it places on young models.
“They have to look good on AND off the set,” she wrote. “They have to arrive backstage at fashion shows looking and dressed as if they are already ON a runway. They have to be slimmer than slim. Skinnier than skinny.”
One of the 21st century trends to blame? Social media.
“[Models] have to have tons of followers on social media to book top-notch jobs,” she wrote. “And they have to do selfies that make them look relatable, but not TOO relatable, because then people may comment that they don’t understand. ‘Why the heck is THAT girl a friggin’ model??!!!!”
She contradicted today’s sky-high standards with the more lax attitude that defined the industry during her heyday, admitting that she was a size 6 when she was a model, not a size 0 (she also admitted that she used to show up to high-end fashion shows wearing baggy jeans, a flannel shirt and high-tops… and the designers were completely okay with it!)
“I’m sending love and hugs to all working, aspiring and super models worldwide,” she said. “You all have lots to live up to. And I’m here cheering for you every single day. Stay strong girls.”
Preach, Tyra!
