The legendary Ruby Dee has died at 91. As we celebrate her legacy and accomplishments in the arts, we’re reminded how difficult it was for Blacks to find hairstylists who could manage our hair in early Hollywood. “I dreaded when I got my hair done because I knew they didn’t know what to do with my hair,” Ruby said in a video for the National Visionary Leadership Project. “They weren’t accustomed to dealing with our hair!”
Press play to watch the talented Ruby and her beloved Ossie Davis reflect on their experience with hair and makeup in Hollywood.
