The hip-hop community has been mourning the loss of one of their pioneers with the passing of Phife Dawg, who died Wednesday after a long battle with diabetes.
The founding member of A Tribe Called Quest has received countless tributes, including the one given by ESSENCE Fest headliner Kendrick Lamar and his 18,000 fans in Sydney, Australia.

“Today we lost one of the pioneers in hip-hop, today, by the name of Phife Dawg. Right now ain’t nobody cheering about me. We’re gonna give it up for him, for allowing me to do what I’m doing on this stage right here, right now, today!” Lamar tells the crowd before leading them in a chant.

“Let’s get this chant going. Phife!” Lamar instructs, as fans respond “Dawg!”
“Forever hip-hop. We gon’ be alright,” Lamar ends the tribute.
