When it comes to controversial topics, Wendy Williams always speaks her mind. Recently the talk show host produced Lifetime’s Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, which aired last night. And when asked why she felt it important to be involved, Wendy explained to Bilboard, “Lifetime needed to tell this story correctly. Fans won’t say, ‘Oh, my God, how could you disgrace her memory?’ And nosy people like me who want to find out things will also be fine.”
Williams further explained, “Aaliyah was a take-charge young lady with strong opinions about her career. This movie tells all those stories without being distasteful.

Earlier this year, Aaliyah’s family told TMZ that they didn’t think Lifetime was the right venue for Aaliyah’s life story, and declined to offer the music rights. Eventually the film was able to obtain publishing rights.
When the film finally aired, Twitter (including Williams’ Instagram) was filled with comments and memes that made fun of the casting decisions for the film.

Lifetime is also set to air Whitney Houston’s story. The family is up in arms because they feel it should be a movie, but Williams disagrees. “Five years ago, I would have said the same thing,” she said. “But TV is where it’s at.”
