Corey Menafee, a Black Yale University dishwasher, resigned after he smashed a stain-glassed window, one of many that depicted slavery, in the Calhoun College dining hall with a broom handle.
The NYT reports that he was initially arrested by Yale police to whom he told, “No employee should be subject to coming to work and seeing slaves portraits on a daily basis.”
Menafee, who had worked at the university for about eight years and worked in Calhoun since last December, was charged with a misdemeanor for reckless endangerment in the second degree and a felony for criminal mischief in the first degree.
In a statement posted on Tuesday, Yale states that it requested that the state’s attorney not press charges.
