Elizabeth Warren doesn’t care if big businesses don’t like her plans to hold them accountable. In fact, in a recent tweet aimed at Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, the 2020 presidential hopeful demonstrated just how many cares she had to give.
On Tuesday, The Verge leaked audio of Zuckerberg saying in a company meeting that he would legally challenge the Senator’s idea to implement regulatory change for big tech companies if she became President.
“If she gets elected president, then I would bet that we will have a legal challenge, and I would bet that we will win the legal challenge,” he can be heard telling employees.
“Does that still suck for us? Yeah. I mean, I don’t want to have a major lawsuit against our own government. That’s not like the position you want to be in. We care about our country and want to work with our government to do good things,” he contended. “But look, at the end of the day, if someone’s going to try to threaten something that existential, you go to the mat and you fight.”
That may have calmed fears throughout Facebook headquarters, but it didn’t sit well with Warren. After hearing of the audio, the popular Democratic candidate shot back.
“What would really ‘suck,’” Warren tweeted, “is if we don’t fix a corrupt system that lets giant companies like Facebook engage in illegal anti-competitive practices, stomp on consumer privacy rights, and repeatedly fumble their responsibility to protect our democracy.
In addition to setting Zuckerberg straight, Warren also took the opportunity to retweet her plan on “How We Can Break Up Big Tech” while letting her followers know that she’s not afraid of challenging big tech companies.
In March, she said of her proposal, “Today’s big tech companies have too much power — too much power over our economy, our society, and our democracy. Adding, “I want a government that makes sure everybody — even the biggest and most powerful companies in America — plays by the rules.”
