Now this is the ultimate Mother’s Day gift.
Chris Bridges, AKA Ludacris, bought his first house in Atlanta after finding success as a rapper in the early 2000s, outfitting it with leather ottomans, a bare bones kitchen and the logo of his record company painted on an office wall.
“At that point I had really no sense of style,” he says in the latest episode of My Houzz.
His bachelor pad soon found a new owner, though, after Bridges convinced his mother, Roberta, to move from Virginia to Georgia to be near his growing family.
“My mom and my relationship is very close,” he says. “She’s one of the people who first introduced me to hard work and dedication. That’s why I am where I am, and who I am, today.”
Once he handed the keys over, however, the aesthetic of the property no longer reflected its primary resident.
“When she moved into it, she was wanting to make it her own,” Bridges, 39, says. “But a lot of the rooms my mother has started on are just incomplete.”
To help transition his former digs into a relaxing retreat for his mom, Bridges teamed up with designer Rachel Oliver, who went to work ridding the living room, dining room, office and kitchen of its worst offenders, including outdated appliances, dark color schemes and what she describes as “the biggest sectional I’ve ever seen.”
The first thing on Oliver’s list: Handing a paintbrush to Bridges’ wife, Eudoxie, to cover up his tribute to “Disturbing Tha Peace.”
“I’ll do it for mom,” Eudoxie says.
Outfitting the “old school” kitchen with double ovens (and a step so Roberta can reach the microwave!), incorporating feminine elements throughout and adding a touch of glam to the dining room were just the details needed to bring each room to life.
“It makes me feel that I’m blessed beyond belief,” an emotional Roberta says after seeing her new home. “What I would say to them is, ‘Thank you for loving me.’”
For Bridges, the grand gesture, he says, was the least he could do.
“I feel like every child wants to do everything they can possibly do for their mom to give back an ounce of what their mother has given them,” he says. “This is one step closer.”
