Diana Ross hit the music scene and became the Queen of Motown back in the 1960s, but many of her style choices still reign supreme today. And who better than her daughter, Tracee Ellis Ross, to take a cue from Diana’s fashion-forward ways.
The Black-ish actress did just that at Thursday’s amfAR Gala in Cannes, hitting red carpet wearing a glamorous red sequin Jenny Packham Spring 2018 Bridal design with long feathered sleeves. She teamed the look with a matching satin clutch and vibrant red lip.
The head-turning gown is reminiscent of one of Diana’s go-to performance looks: a bright red dress and oversize ruffled cape, which she’s been sporting onstage since her start in music.
It doesn’t come as much of a surprise to see Tracee pull inspo from her famous mom for the red carpet — she handles much of her own red carpet styling, makeup and hair herself (she created her entire MTV Movie & TV Awards look on her own). She even learned her best piece of fashion advice from Diana too.
“My mom taught me that you can spend money on nice things if you’re going to use them,” she told PeopleStyle. “For example, I have an Alexander McQueen jacket that I wear with everything, even sweatpants.”
In terms of selecting a red carpet style, it’s all about comfort for Tracee too.
“My rule is: When in doubt, don’t! If there’s something that makes you feel uncomfortable at home, can you imagine how you’re going to feel when those pictures hit the Internet? People are brutal!” she said.
And it doesn’t seem Tracee worries too much about competition between her and Diana, especially after cinching her first Golden Globe Award this year!
“I’ve never felt like I was in my mother’s shadow,” Tracee told PEOPLE. “If anything, I felt like I was in her embrace. But I did have a sense of wanting to find my own path as a person.”
