We’ve geared up for the release of the all-Black-everything movie that is Queen & Slim. Without spoilers, this cinematic piece of art chronicles two people on a Tinder first date that’s gone wrong. (Stay tuned for our Tinder horror stories video!)
The title characters, played by our gorgeous November cover girl, Jodie Turner-Smith and chocolate hearthrob Daniel Kaluuya, Queen and Slim end up being each other’s ride or die partners on the run. So while on the red carpet for the AFI Fest premiere of their film, we asked the cast, crew and some of your faves who they would tap for their own Queen and/or Slim.
Many of them are married or in committed relationships and didn’t want any issues with their significant others, so Kelly Rowland, Lena Waithe, Melina Matsoukas, Daniel Kaluuya, Dear White People‘s creator Justin Simien and The-Dream all named their partners. But there were a select few special guests who chose strategically and named Zendaya, Cardi B and even Queen & Slim writer Lena Waithe as their cinematic other half.
Queen & Slim displays a Black love that feels powerful, vulnerable, revolutionary and honestly unbreakable. It’s special. “Black love is being seen. Black love is joy, despite what you may go through, despite microagressions and what you see out there,” Daniel Kaluuya shared when asked about what makes Black love special.
