The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air first aired in September 1990 and went on to have a successful six seasons before the last episode aired on NBC in May 1996.
Prior to landing the lead role in the hit series, Will Smith was a rapper. As HuffPost writes, Smith accepted the role after he had forgot to pay the IRS and owed $2.8 million in back taxes. In order to pay the sum, Smith’s financial advisors urged him to take the show NBC had offered, though Smith had no prior acting experience.
Not only is the show still considered a major gem in the Black community today, but it also birthed one of Hollywood’s hottest couples, Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith. The couple met while Pinkett-Smith was auditioning for the role as his onscreen girlfriend. She didn’t get the role because apparently she was too short.
