Mary J. Blige received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2019 BET Awards and it’s obvious why. The singer built her entire career on cathartic womens empowerment anthems, f-ckyboy-be-gone bops and gave us words like: “hateration,” “holleration” and “dancerie.”
Not only has Blige solidified herself as the Queen of Hip Hop Soul throughout her career, but she’s still reigning on the throne.
“Her happiness, her pain, her love, her hurt, everything about what she has shared in her music has touched us all at one point in our lives,” Love & Hip Hop producer Mona Scott-Young told ESSENCE on the red carpet Sunday.
“She just continues to evolve as an artist. She’s everything and more,” Elle Varner added.
While on the “Nipsey Blue” carpet at the 2019 BET Awards, we asked celebrities to give us their best “Mary bop,” and the impressions were all pretty epic.
Rotimi gave us a bop that only a Nigerian father would be proud of. Method Man bopped just like his “You’re All I Need” collaborator, and B. Simone added some squats into her bop, thus proving her knees are young and strong.
Check out the video above to see how the rest of your faves dance like Mary, and also why she deserves her flowers now.
