Nipsey Hussle is gone, but he will never be forgotten. At the 2019 BET Awards, the network rolled out the blue carpet in honor of the slain rapper and ESSENCE was there, asking celebrities how they are honoring Hussle’s legacy.
In March, the rapper was gunned down outside of his clothing store in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. He was only 33.
Hussle, whose birth name was Ermias Asghedom, was known for being a community advocate and activist. In fact, he was meeting up with a man named Kerry Lathan, who had recently been released from jail to provide him fresh clothes before meeting with friends and family when he was murdered.
Marsai Martin told ESSENCE that she keeps Hussle’s legacy alive by “pushing and being authentically me.”
“Nipsey…was authentically true to himself; [it was] absolutely amazing,” the Little executive producer and star added.
Method Man said he’s carrying on the rapper’s mission with his work through Have A Heart NY, a Staten Island-based nonprofit that raises awareness and creates programs and events for underprivileged youth.
“We’re helping out at-risk youth [by getting] bags for school, trips for summer [leisure], job education, things of that nature,” he said. “Anytime I step out of my house, I’m giving back to my community.”
