On Monday, VH1’s Hip Hop Honors dedicated an hour of programming to celebrate the genre made mainstream in the 1990s. Filmed in Los Angeles, the gathering brought out influencers like Missy Elliott, Mariah Carey, Pharrell Williams, Hype Williams, Martin Lawrence, Warren G and Fat Joe— who’s careers flourished in the bright, high-energy filled decade.
But some watching the program felt that more 1990’s artists should have been honored— some like SWV.
On Facebook Leanne “Lelee” Lyons voiced her opinion about the night. “Soooooo, @VH1 is doing a show on game changers of the 90’s, but not invite most of the artists that changed the game? Where they do that at?”
While Lyons felt passionate about the lack of representation, others had a different opinion on what aired. Find out how the dialogue went down, in the video above.
