Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is proud of the Samoan and Black excellence swimming in his veins.
In fact, he takes both sides of his heritage with him wherever he goes; from movies to interviews and everywhere in between.
With the latest from the Fast & Furious franchise, Hobbs & Shaw, Johnson continues to represent his people with pride. Without spoilers, Hobbs & Shaw took us back to Johnson’s home in Samoa, not only showcasing the stunning landscape, but giving us a birds-eye view of Samoan culture.
As you might imagine, it was stunning.
Watching a Samoan mother take off her shoe and threaten her unruly child, felt like home. Seeing Hobbs’s (Johnson’s) Samoan brothers gather around him with brains and brawn to help him fight his problems was nothing short of beautiful.
“The Samoan culture has never been showcased [in Hollywood film],” Johnson shared with ESSENCE.
The Samoan culture is strong and according to Johnson, it’s very similar to Black culture. “They integrate and mix very well. Proud and passionate…there’s a hunger on both sides,” Johnson shared.
