Despite everything Black women face in America, allow ESSENCE to proclaim that 2018 has been the year of the Black woman.
We were elected to Congress, we closed multi-million dollar deals (and in one case, a
billion-dollar deal!) and we made history—all while maintaining the grace and poise it takes to wear our crowns proudly.
With 2018 coming to a close, many people are beginning to reflect on how this year has treated them.
Although we’ve had to trudge through having a toddler for a president, there have been countless Black women wins worth celebrating. Two that come to mind instantly are Oprah Winfrey becoming the first Black woman to win the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes, and our queen, Beyoncé, making history as the first Black woman to headline the Coachella Music Festival.
